Funding a huge win for the region

News Article Date:
Friday, 22 May 2020

Funding announced for Tower Hill, the 12 Apostles trail and the Portland foreshore was a huge bonus for all of the South West, Chair of the Great South Coast group Tony Herbert said this week.

The Victorian Government will provide $11.3 million to improve the visitor experience at Tower Hill State Game Reserve, $4.5 for the Timboon to Port Campbell 12 Apostles trail, $3 million for Portland’s foreshore and a further $1.2 million for the Portland Bay marina extension.

“A strong and growing region with investment from either governments or the private sector is good for every resident in the Great South Coast Region,” Cr Herbert said.

“I’m delighted that the Government is investing in the region.

“These commitments from the State provide tremendous support to our push to encourage more overnight stays in the Great South Coast region.

“We’re all aware of how unique and appealing our natural environment is.

“The funding for infrastructure will enhance access to our special places – it will also help protect them.

“Tower Hill has more than 270,000 visitors annually and is getting more popular, so this significant investment will help ensure that it can cope with the growing number of visitors.

“While these projects are under way we’re going to see the benefits flow from a construction and jobs perspective.

“And when they are complete we’re going to have an even better visitor experience to offer not only people coming to our region but also for local residents.

“We’re extremely thankful for the support from the Victorian Government and the benefits of these investments do not stop at municipal borders.”

“A funding announcement for any new infrastructure in neighbouring municipalities  is a win for the entire region.”
